1. a thin and usually oval or oblong board or tablet with a thumb hole at one end, used by painters for holding and mixing colours.

I'm so impressed that your school taught William of Tyre. I quoted him and added a lot of ellipses, fearing the blood and gore parts were too brutal for many readers.
